A Bluebird's Memories by Tuula Pere is one of the most beautiful, powerful, and emotionally-riveting books in Pere's vast children's book collection! We were pleasantly surprised by the nuances, complexity, and emotional impact of the book. Although it hurts to say, young people often mistakenly think of the elderly (like grandmas and grandpas) as somehow invalid, incapable, dull, and boring. They're sometimes viewed as has-beens who are past their prime with little more to contribute to society and the next generation. Well, nothing could be further from the truth! Grandmas and grandpas can be some of the wisest, toughest, most fascinating, interesting, and—dare we say—exciting—of all people! With age comes experience, wisdom, and a boat load of interesting stories to tell! Indeed, the elderly have some of the best stories—many of them stranger and cooler than fiction. You'll hear them a lot in healthcare facilities or just from reading their books. Some of the best memoirs in our contests have been written by people over the age of 55. They have so many interesting things to talk about! A Bluebird's Memories centers on a Grandma Bluebird who has given birth to multiple broods or generations of other bluebirds. Her feathers are turning from gray to blue. It's hard not to sympathize with her. We're all aging in one way or another and confront (or ignore it) in different ways. The books starts off by giving readers the impression that she is less mobile and lonelier than she was in years prior. However, thankfully, her grandkids—some cute, curious bluebird chicks—come and visit her to stay the night. Being cute and curious, the grandkids constantly ask Grandma Bluebird questions about herself and her past. They hungry for stories, which Grandma Bluebird obliges. Her stories include the time when she stopped a mouse from eating a wire connected to the audio system with which someone was using to speak (presumably a politician, activist, or community advocate). She also found, retrieved, and returned a couple's wedding band/ring after it had fallen. We also get the harrowing story of Grandma Bluebird's most frightening experience, trying to escape and survive a fire along with her baby bluebirds. All of these stories highlight the fact that, though Grandma Bluebird is/was small, she still made a huge difference in the world. This book is incredibly heartwarming with just about the perfect balance of cuteness, intrigue, and presenting a powerful message without becoming overly convoluted. We have no doubt that you and your children will love Grandma Bluebird as much as we did! Check it out on Amazon!
