Are you or a loved one preparing for a surgery? This might be a worthwhile read! What to Expect and how to Prepare for Your Surgery is a short, sweet, simple, and to-the-point medical book about some of the nuances of going into surgery. There are few things scarier and more nerve-wrecking than surgery. It can leave you feeling powerless and vulnerable. However, knowledge is power, and this book provides just that. While this isn't an exhaustive, encyclopedic textbook, this book still answers some of the questions you might have about surgery. For example: Why do we have to limit and/or abstain from food and drinks before surgery? What is the difference between general anesthesia and local anesthesia? What about sedation? When and why are they used or not used? What if you're pregnant? Should you be concerned? What about dietary and herbal supplements? Can you take those? What about your CPAP or medications? Should you take those with you to the hospital? Why should you take these with you if you expect the facility to have these available anyway? What other things should you bring? Your toothbrush? Spare clothes? What kinds of questions should you be prepared to ask? What should you do if you don't understand the procedure(s) or what the healthcare worker is telling you? What is consent? What can you do with a permanent marker if your surgery site is in one area of the body in order to avoid confusion? This book acts like a pamphlet, answering these questions. We do wish that it was a bit more substantive and in-depth. Whenever you have a book like this that's very niche and specific, we always hope to learn as much as possible about that subject or topic. However, this is a more than adequate book to ease your mind before surgery. Check it out on Amazon!
